Title: The Bitter End
Creator: Thomas Weiling
Released: 21st April 2008
Length: 10 Levels (No secrets)
Level Format: Continuous
New Story: No
Graphics: Original Wolfenstein
Sound: Original Wolfenstein (Changed order)
Special Features: Increased actor and sprite count
Dos/SDL: Dos
Initial impressions: An original mapset that plays really well as a replacement for Episode 1.
Gameplay: Challenging but with a nice flow through all levels. There are a few smallish mazes but the level structure is mapped in a nice way so the player never gets 'lost' wondering how to complete a level. A little bit of back tracking on occasion after finding keys.
Mapping: The maps are at Thomas' usual high standard that has seen his mods receive numerous Dome Awards. The maps aren't as challenging as some of his larger mods, like 'All this and Wolf 3d', but are still representative of his mapping ability and are very enjoyable to play.
Likes: Nice, effective use of the Hitler Ghosts. Entertaining, challenging maps that keep the player guessing.
Dislikes: Some of these levels have appeared before in other mapsets. Hitler ghosts, although well used, seem very easy to kill (maybe speeding up their fireballs could have made them more of a challenge). Some Hitler Ghosts remain frozen when player comes in sight.
Ratings
Dean's Score: 6.5/10
Difficulty: A good challenge but not too tough
Best Level: 2
Worst Level: 9
Wrap-up: A fun little mod that isn't too big a challenge like some of Thomas' other releases. The mod is easy to play and challenging. Not Thomas' best work but at a fun level and a quick mod you can run through easily on a rainy afternoon.
