Review: Spear Revisited by Executor

Details
Title:
Spear Revisited
Creator:
Executor
Released:
11/02/2007
Length: 21 Levels
Level Format: Continuous
New Story: No
Graphics: original set completely replaced, some new walls taken from other mods.
Sound: All new music and some new sounds.
Special Features: Additional skill level, new sounds, new hi-res weapons, new guards & on screen text.
Dos/SDL: Dos4GW (A Dos extender)

Initial impressions: Beautifully designed walls and sprites, levels are well done and the sound is fantastic. Guard selection and coloring makes each enemy type more distinctive.

Gameplay: The gameplay is quite challenging in areas with many guards on each level, especially at the start until you get a feel for their placement. This is the type of mod where the player needs to be careful when playing rather then just running through with all guns blazing.

Mapping: Well thought out larger levels, the whole mod definitely has a set idea and flow about it. There aren't too many maze areas but there is some back tracking after finding keys to get back to locked doors, on some levels. There is some excessive sprite placement which makes it impossible to collect some treasure items. Good amount of secret areas with a nice balance of health and ammo supplied.

Likes: The sounds and music are fantastic and really match the level designs very well. The new guards look really great, with all being noticeably different colors from each other. The sprite recoloring and selection have been very well done. The Dos4GW that the mod has been made in seems to add some richness to the colors and the games overall look.

Dislikes: Some mapping errors that make some treasure items impossible to collect (Levels 7 & 9) which makes it impossible to get 100% on everything for players that like that. The replacement hi-res guns are bigger than the original guns and take up more of the screen, they do look a little too big for my liking though.

Ratings
Dean's Score: 7.5/10
Difficulty: Some difficult scenarios, challenges get more difficult with multiple guards.
Best Level: 9
Worst Level: none

Wrap-up: A very entertaining mod with good challenging large levels that most should enjoy. The new wallset fits very well together and the new sounds are outstanding. Some levels do start to look a bit the same but overall a fun mod that show's how much effort has been put into it's creation. The game is colorfully rich and fun to play.

Where Can I get it?: You can download the full mod by clicking HERE or by clicking on the screenshot at the top of this post. I've even managed to find the 2 level demo which can be downloaded HERE.

Disclaimer: All reviews are only my opinion when playing the mod and are not intended to discredit anyone or the hard work they have put into creating their mod.
