Review: Wolfenstein Umbrella Beginnings - Episode 2 (Operation: End Epidemic)

Details
Title: Wolfenstein Umbrella Beginnings - Episode 2 (Operation: End Epidemic)
Creator:
Jayngo
Released:
04/10/2010
Length: 10 Levels
Level Format: Episodic (Replaces Episode 2)
New Story: Same as Episode 1
Graphics: Original with some modifications
Sound: Original
Special Features: Mines, Timed Invincibility object, guard disguise, 5th weapon, bonus items, movable objects, award system & Journals
Dos/SDL: Dos

Initial impressions: There is a very well developed storyline that continues on from Episode 1. The addition of Bonus items on each level gives the player a new objective each time. The mapping is in a fairly similar style throughout but the scenarios leading up to keys and bonus items can be quite difficult.

Gameplay: The game play is fast moving and the player needs to be aware of their environments at all times. Each level has a new journal and bonus item to find from a heavily guarded area which gives each level it's own individual objective.

Mapping: The mapping varies throughout the mod. Level 1 is rather poorly mapped but there are some very good scenarios and set ups on most other levels. The Boss levels are very well done and quite challenging making the player think before charging in. The use of different wall types has been done well and there are plenty of well stocked secrets, especially within close proximity to big challenges or Bosses.

Likes: The Bonus items on each level are a great idea and really give each level a new challenge. The super mutants are a good idea and very well done. One of the main things to like is the development and improvement over Episode 1 which shows huge improvement (not that Episode 1 was bad) but shows just how talented a mod maker Jayngo is becoming with each release. The new status bar is also well done and a nice improvement on that from Episode 1.

Dislikes: Level 1, it's a fairly bad, simplistic level with an awful maze that almost made me stop from playing the rest of the mod. The use of the original wall set is something I feel could be improved. Everything else in the mod has had a lot of development and work done except for this. New walls would really help set a better mood for the game and give it more of it's own identity.

Ratings

Dean's Score: 7.5/10
Difficulty: The Super Mutants can very difficult to kill, other guards are as normal.
Best Level: 8
Worst Level: 1

Wrap-up:
A nice step up from the previous, decent Episode 1 release. The addition of the bonus items plus some other features have kept the game fresh and very playable and will keep most players eagerly looking forward to the next installment.
